In our latest collaboration with Engineered Garments Workaday we went to a familiar Winter fabric – NyCo Ripstop. A blended military specification fabric, NyCo Ripstop has increased durability and strength while retaining lightness and comfort and still remains the fabric of choice for armed forces around the world. The items are all designed and manufactured by Engineered Garments in New York, and laundered here in Belfast using Enzyme wash and hung dried to give the fabric a softer feel and better fit. Derek’s practice as a ceramicist centres on making a diverse range of contemporary objects – from the functional to the sculptural. He mainly works in celadon glazed porcelain and stoneware and his objects, whether they are made to be used or not, tend to be placed in groupings – evoking communality and sociability. Being a neighbour of ours here at Portview, it seemed logical for Derek to make us a small limited run of objects he thought suited our store. These are now available online and in store – click the link below to view the collection and check out Opposite Pages’ short film of Derek at work. thebureaubelfast.com/brand/derek-wilson-ceramics thebureaubelfast.com/blog/2014/11/derek-wilson-by-oppositepage
Yuketen’s moccasins are made in the “true Moccasin way” and are genuinely handsewn by highly skilled and experienced leather artisans who take great pride and fulfillment in their work. They are hand–made at Yuketen’s bespoke moccasin factory in Maine, U.S.A. with the concept to create shoes and boots which cradle the bottom of the foot like leather socks. The replaceable sole is a soft–compound working sole from Vibram to maximize cushion and support and Yuketen’s full leather insole offers unparalleled comfort with genuine moccasin style. Complementary to the sole detail, an exemplary sturdy and comfortable nine layers of highest quality materials (e.g. 100% veg–tan leather mid–sole, composition rubber mid–sole, and 100% veg–tan leather tuck) are sandwiched between the foot and the ground. Indicative of the quality materials in this incredible nine–layer platform combination are Yuketen’s exclusive leather tuck and leather mid–sole components, which are made from 100% veg–tan leather that is carefully tanned without foreign chemicals and hung to air dry for ninety days. Yuketen’s exclusive veg–tan leather tuck delivers comfort, durability, authenticity. Yuketen’s Maine Guide DB Chukka silhouette offers a clean–cut and intentionally unfinished top–line with slightly more ankle coverage and more stitching reinforcement than Yuketen’s standard chukka. ”After a few months of wear they will appear as though they have been worn for years”.
Yuketen’s Maine Guide collection draws inspiration from the early wilderness guides of New England. These boots reflect the cultural synthesis brought about by the meeting of European hunters and traders with the native North Americans. The trade mark of the style was the close fit, the moccasin construction alined with the modern footwear knowledge brought by these European pioneers. It was from these humble beginnings that the Classic American Guide boot was born. The first piece of Yuketen that we ever stocked at The Bureau was a special make–up of the Guide boot and though this has often been copied “The Yuketen Guide Boot” still remains a very beautiful and desirable piece of footwear. Below are some the components that go into the special construction of a “Yuketen Guide Boot” these days. 1:A Vibram Christy out sole complements the dense eight layers of rubber and leather underfoot. 2:A distinctive mid–sole component, constructed from composition rubber and 100% vegetable–tanned leather which has been air–dried in a 90–day process and is Goodyear–stitched together before being directly stitched to the vamp leather. 3:Steel shank reinforcements increase fitting in the arch and heel, forming a stable bridge between the heel and ball of the owner’s foot which causes weight to be distributed more evenly across the foot and reduces foot fatigue. 4:Yuketen’s signature tucks and full leather insoles are also made from 100% vegetable–tanned leather and will naturally accommodate the distinct shape of the wearer’s foot over time. The result is a shoe that will cradle its owner’s foot.
